Business Administration Programs Offer Many Career Opportunities
Many students enroll in business administration programs because they think it will help them be a good leader. But a degree in this field also offers many opportunities for careers in accounting, finance, international business and logistics, project management and marketing.
AU is committed to helping students gain valuable real-world experience and skills through business internships that often lead to job offers. The school also offers a variety of fun faculty-led study trips around the world.
Business Documentation
Many people pursue a degree in business administration thinking they have leadership skills, but once they start taking courses they realize that there is much more to the field than management. Students learn about a wide variety of subjects, including accounting, finance, economics, human resource management and legal and ethical studies.
One of the most important lessons a business administration student will learn is how to properly document all aspects of business transactions. This includes receipts for expenses, meeting minutes and standard operating procedures. Having clear and legible documentation is essential for any organization, especially when dealing with third-party reviewers.
This course also gives the student an opportunity to practice formatting documents, using the latest office software programs and creating templates for different types of business documents. It will also help the student develop an understanding of the basic concepts and vocabulary associated with different types of offices and the services they provide. This includes the use of e-mail, instant messaging and other forms of communication.
Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is the linguistic foundation upon which healthcare rests. Aspiring doctors, nurses and other clinical professionals are nearly always required to learn medical terminology in their graduate programs, and it is also important for other healthcare workers like veterinary students, physical and occupational therapists, medical billing specialists and medical assistants.
Having a strong grasp of medical terminology can help reduce miscommunication among the various healthcare disciplines, which can have severe consequences for patients. Medical terminology classes provide an introduction to specialized word parts including prefixes, suffixes and word roots as well as their combined use to form terms.
Students learn to identify word parts such as -blast, meaning immature cell; -edema, swelling; -itis, inflammation; and -oma, tumor. Students are also introduced to medical terms for body systems and diagnostic tests and procedures. For example, a medical billing specialist may code “cholecystectomy,” surgical removal of the gallbladder, for a patient with cholelithiasis. This allows them to understand the relationship between a patient’s condition and the part of the body it affects.
Contract Management
Students in a business administration program will need to know how to manage contracts. This includes negotiating with vendors, tracking expiration dates and renewals, and making sure the institution complies with all applicable laws and regulations. This is an important part of running a successful university and keeping stakeholders informed.
A contract management system that offers a central repository for all agreement documents and an easy-to-use search function will make it easier to stay on top of contract obligations. This will also help to avoid any surprises down the road. Having a plan in place that defines how contract deliverables will be executed (including both internal and third-party personnel, if necessary) is another way to ensure accountability and transparency. It will also keep both parties on the same page and allow for course corrections if needed.
